Presentation at the 73rd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Child Health

This study examined parental concerns, information-seeking behaviors, experiences of consulting healthcare professionals, and trust in digital information regarding early childhood vaccination. A nationwide web-based survey was conducted among 2,400 parents of children under six years of age. The results showed that parental concerns were concentrated mainly on the risk of adverse reactions and vaccine safety, while only about 30% of parents had asked healthcare professionals questions about vaccination. The findings also suggested that limited opportunities for consultation and psychological barriers may prevent parents from resolving their concerns. In making vaccination decisions, parents placed particular importance on reliable and professional information sources, such as physicians, the Maternal and Child Health Handbook, and municipal notifications.

Based on these findings, the study highlights the need to develop support systems that complement healthcare professionals’ explanations and help parents access reliable information and seek advice with confidence.
